What is the best way to get your music on Spotify? Before releasing any of my songs, I did a small research to find out for myself. I always thought the barrier to get on such platforms was big, but it is actually quite easy. In this article, I will tell you how to upload your own music on Spotify, Apple Music, and other streaming services.

What do I need to upload music to Spotify?

Basically, the most essential things you need to upload your music to Spotify are:

  • An artist name
  • An e-mail address
  • A bank account with credit card
  • A dope ass song that you made and own all rights to

What are the ways to upload songs to Spotify?

There are several ways to get your music on Spotify. You can do this through a record label company, but you can also do this by yourself. If you’re an independent artist, you’d have to use something called a Digital Service Provider (DSP). These are companies that focus on distributing media, such as your music, to various streaming platforms such as Apple Music, Spotify, Pandora, etcetera. There are a lot of options here, for example, TuneCore, DistroKid, Landr, AWAL to name a few. You have some that cost money, and also some that are free. However, the downside of the free ones, usually is that you don’t receive all royalties from your tracks. So keep that in mind and make sure to check that out when making your decision on which way to go.

After some online research on different ways to upload music, asking around on forums such as Reddit and talking to fellow artists in real life, I stumbled upon DistroKid as the best option for me. Lots of people were sharing their positive experience with this service, so I became interested.

What is Distrokid?

DistroKid is a service for musicians that puts your music into online stores & streaming services. It is the only service that lets you upload unlimited music to stores for one price, which is very nice to have as a beginning artist. Other services make you pay every time you upload something, which is way more expensive. This distributor is being used by solo musicians, bands, DJs, performers, producers, and YouTube creators who record music at home or in the studio and they have services for labels as well. It is being recommended by lots of magazines, blogs, and communities such as TechCrunch, Forbes and Digital Music News. Also, famous artists such as Ludacris and 21 Savage upload their music via Distrokid.

What is so nice about Distrokid?

What I really like is that it is very affordable, especially to start out with, and you keep 100% of your royalties. The cheapest package is called Musician and it costs $19.99 per year. With this package, you’re able to upload unlimited songs & albums to multiple streaming services and online stores for one year. It also uploads your music very fast to streaming services and online stores.

I started out with the cheapest plan but upgraded the middle-priced plan called Musician Plus, which costs $35.99 per year, because it offered me some more features such as being able to schedule my releases and editing my label name. A great thing about their plans is that you can easily upgrade at any time without having it to be more expensive. They bill you by a percentage calculation of how long you’ve used which plan.

My advice would be to start out with the basic plan and try it out for yourself. By using this link you will even get 7% off your first-year membership: https://distrokid.com/vip/seven/1198475
